Thousands of charity organizations give us the opportunity to feed the hungry but only a few work to transform lives. Sponsor a child through World Vision India and bring transformation in the lives of malnourished children.

4-year-old Pravanjan lives with his parents and three sisters in a community we serve in Khagaria, Bihar. Pravanjan is a very active and adorable child. He plays with his sisters every day and his presence creates a cheerfulness around him. He welcomes the guests with an enthusiastic smile and laughter.

But this was not the case of Pravanjan in first two years of his life. He was thin and weak and couldn’t stand or walk. His father Sharma is a daily wage labourer and his mother Seetha is a homemaker.

“I did not have any money to meet a doctor or to buy medicines. All I could do was to long for any possibility that would make my son to stand and walk,” says Pravanjan’s mother

Pravanjan was two years old when a World Vision India staff met him. He was so weak that he couldn’t even turn himself over. His MUAC (Mid Upper Arm Circumference) value was only 11.3 cms and his weight only 7.75 kg, making him the most malnourished child in the community.

Pravanjan was admitted in the NRC (Nutrition Rehabilitation Center) by a World Vision India staff. After the 15 days stay in NRC, Pravanjan’s health was being monitored by World Vision India staff and volunteers through regular house visits and check-ups. Training on the preparation of nutritious food with locally available vegetables and fruits was given to his mother. A food basket (supplementary foods and basic grocery items to feed the hungry) was provided every month. Through the awareness programmes on cleanliness, health and proper diet, the parents were equipped to help their children grow up healthy.

After continuous care for a year, Pravanjan has become a healthy child, full of energy and is spreading his joy within the family every day. When he reached the age of three and a half, his weight had increased to 10 kgs and his MUAC range had increased to 31.5 cms.

“When I saw him for the first time I didn’t expect that he was going to walk one day. Now every time I see him running to me and speaking with laughter, I consider it a miracle,” says a World Vision India staff.

According to the National Family Health Survey 4, in the rural part of Khagaria district the total children within the age of 6–23 months receiving an adequate diet was only 7%. Around 50.5% of the children under 5 years are stunted (height-for-age) and around 17% of the children under 5 years are wasted (weight-for-height). Children under 5 years who are severely wasted (weight-for-height) are around 6.4% and children under 5 years who are underweight (weight-for-age) are 42.9%.
