How Can We help Orphans?
Children who are orphaned are the most defenseless and helpless. With no one to care for, they are left at the mercy of relatives. World Vision India fights for the voiceless through sponsor a child program, for those who cannot defend themselves and for the communities and families living in contexts of poverty and injustice.
Little Saloni was orphaned when she was six months old. Ninnva Ram (fondly known as ‘Tau’) then began to look after Saloni and her three elder brothers. 65-year-old Ninnva Ram sacrificed his desires to ensure Saloni and her brothers have a good future. Despite all his efforts, Ninnva could not afford to provide for the children’s education.
When Saloni was 5 years old she voluntarily went to the education centre run by World Vision India and learnt the English alphabet, numbers, a few stories and poems.
“Despite being underage, she came to the Remedial Education Centre in the community every week consistently and learned what children aged 6 and above were being taught,” said Poonam, a World Vision India Volunteer.
Saloni’s dream to go to school came to pass through an intervention by World Vision India’s Citizen Voice and Action (CVA) group working in this community. Naresh, a member of the CVA group successfully availed the provision of a scheme for free education for several children in the community, including Saloni.
There were several hindrances that came their way to help Saloni gain this provision. Because she didn’t have a birth certificate or a caste certificate, both being crucial to access this facility. Naresh, then, took it upon himself to apply for her birth certificate and help her get this seat in a private school. He filed an affidavit for Saloni and paid for it knowing that her uncle won’t be able to afford it.
After months of waiting, Saloni’s name finally appeared on the list of children enrolled in private schools. In 2017, she began studying in an English medium private school in Agra. The tuition fees, the books, and all facilities will be free of cost till she completes her 8th grade.
“My desire is that she studies as much as possible and achieves great heights,” said Ninnva Ram, sharing his heart’s desire for Saloni.
Saloni wants to grow up to be a police officer. When asked what inspires her to become a police officer, she says, “I watched a video about a police officer in the education centre and ever since I want to become one”
A Citizen Voice and Action (CVA) group is formed in each community by World Vision India to empower and enable community members to access their rights and provisions availed by the government for their sustainable development.
Because of sponsors and donors, World Vision India is able to work among communities giving them awareness and strengthening them to overcome their poverty. Through World Vision India’s child sponsorship programme, you can ensure that families and communities are empowered and fully equipped to sustain themselves.
Donate towards a child’s education and help poor children like Saloni have hope of a better future.
